Time-saving cleaning tips including uses for two economical and effective "green" cleaners you probably have on hand - vinegar and baking soda.

  • Create a paste with equal parts white vinegar and baking soda. Rub the paste into coffee mugs and teacups to remove stubborn stains.

  • Pour vinegar into a bowl and allow it to sit in a room overnight to help remove foul odors.

  • Pour a cup of white vinegar down a sink garbage disposal and allow it to rest for one hour to clean and deodorize it.

  • Take your shoes off at the door. It’s amazing how much cleaner you can keep your home when you do this. Plus, toxic materials on your shoes will stay at the door. Less dirt means less sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming, this results in less work, water, and energy.

  • Keep inside air quality healthier by opening windows. During winter months we tend not to open windows - trapping toxins inside and locking fresh air outside. Open windows as often as possible to allow fresh air in and keep toxins flowing out. When it’s cold crack windows for an hour or so.

  • Design your home or building with cleanabilty in mind. You can create spaces that are cleaner, healthier, and require fewer substances to maintain. In larger buildings, good cleanability can be a big money-saver as cleaning costs can often add up to as much as half of a building's total energy costs.

  • If the dishwasher's not full, add burner covers or small shelves from the refrigerator - anything that needs to be washed.

  • Quickly clean heater vents in the dishwasher rather than washing each one by hand. This is a quick way to finish up a dreary cleaning chore.

  • If you have limited time and a busy schedule clean one room a day instead of trying to do your whole house at once.
